Bittersweet Summer Welcome

Wendell Williams ES

Shout out to all the ACF Chefs who volunteered at this month’s Cookin’ Up Breakfast program at Wendell Williams ES. We had a lot of fun putting smiles on more kids faces, and more importantly – nutritious meals in their tummies!

This month’s breakfast was sponsored by Chef Anthony and the team at The Cosmopolitan who provided a free healthy breakfast consisting of a ham, cheese and egg breakfast burrito wrapped in a whole grain tortilla, a fruit cup, and blueberry crepes! ACF chef volunteers were on-site to help prepare and serve the food. While the blueberry crepes were a fun addition to the meal, they turned out to be a bit messy as a few kids accidentally dropped them, sending blueberry sauce everywhere! But it was all in good fun, and more importantly, giving kids a chance to explore new foods they may not get at home.

This breakfast was bittersweet for us as it marked our last Cookin’ Up Breakfast program for the 2021-2022 school year. It feels like we were just getting used to seeing the kids faces again, and now comes summer. Never fear, the program will be back next year and we hope you will join us as a volunteer. Also, if you have a company that is willing to sponsor either financially, in-kind with food donations, and/or willing to provide chefs to prepare and serve the meals, please reach out to our partners at Chefs for Kids to get the conversation started!
